The Dream Act is coming back

Establishment Republicans and Democrats in Congress are working to resurrect legislation that would grant amnesty to hundreds of thousands of young illegal aliens who are currently residing in the United States.

According to McClatchy, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Sen. Dick Durbin (R-Ill.) are crafting a replica version of the DREAM Act which was implemented during the Obama administration and supported by Democrats and establishment Republicans.

“We’re working on it,” Graham said Monday. “We’ll see.”

The legislation is aimed at giving legal status and a pathway to citizenship to the hundreds of thousands of young illegal aliens currently being protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program created by former President Obama.

Last week, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly told members of Congress that DACA is unlikely to withstand a legal challenge brought by Texas and nine other states.

Immigration advocates have sought to pass legislation resembling DACA for more than a decade, but there has never been enough support in Congress to pass such a bill.

The Trump administration has until Sept. 5 to decide whether to rescind the DACA program or face the states’ court challenge.
